Strange days – I finally got the app store update…no idea why I didn’t install it the second I knew about it as normal but I have been sick. It’s genius. I’m now really looking forward to Lion. They’ve essentially made installing even easier, and made it so simple for me to waste hours upon hours and dollars upon dollars installing fun new apps on my Mac. I think the App store for Macs potentially does a few great things: They get even more control over the Mac experience – Theoretically making everything an app puts it through another level [...]

Ok I know that some of you Windows to Mac converts remember Snag It – it’s an easy, easy, easy way to do screen capture and light image editing. I know guys, command-option-3 and 4…yes, they totally work and yes I still use them sometimes. And yes I know they’re free and Snag it is not. But here’s why it’s worth it for me… Scrolling window capture. Oh yes, that’s what I said. Now, I really, really wish this worked in browsers other than Firefox (please please makers of Snag It – I use Chrome!) but you can capture an [...]

“I wonder if someone is saying something about nothing on Facebook that I’ve missed. I’d better check…” Click browser. Type facebook.com, check, check, check… Rockmelt is a Chrome-based browser that feeds into this little OCD habit of mind. It’s a broswer taken to the next level with social media all around the edges. I wondered if it would feed or tame my Facebook checking addiction. As it turns out, it makes all my social media habits a bit more manageable. Rockmelt pulls together just about any combination of social media and RSS you’d like and gives you constant but silent [...]

It’s true, I’m just so busy and important that I can’t be bothered to remember little things like passwords. Or I just have a really bad memory – one of the two. With websites demanding more and more complicated, unique passwords and all the work sites I need to log into, I needed some serious help. 1Password to the rescue! Now I remember literally one password – the one that opens up the program – and in a couple clicks in any of my browsers 1Password fills in the blanks. Not only that, but it guards all my personal info [...]

MacHeist combines my love of cool apps with my love of free stuff. They resurface every once in a while with a bundle of apps that’s usually about 10 apps for the price of one, but this time they have a “nano” bundle they’re running in the name of market research. Basically you take the free bundle and they ask you one question: how much would you have paid for it. That’s it. Then you get access to the whole thing. But hurry, it’s only open for five days. And there’s one catch. One of the apps doesn’t open to [...]

I have several colleagues who are making the big switch from Windows to Mac recently, and it got me thinking about when I made the move from my PC world back to Mac. I had a Mac Classic in college – that baby was a powerhouse! It wasn’t my first brush with an Apple – my Dad had an Apple IIe with the sexy green and white screen and dual 5.25 floppies, but this was my own first Apple. Check out these amazing specs: A roomy black and white 9″ screen no modem because well…no internet. 1 whopping meg of [...]

I got a Mac Mini when I had just lost a job and the laptop I’d used there. I thought to myself, “I need a computer and I don’t think I’ll need to be portable; I’ll get a mini.” It was cute, but it only had 2 gig of RAM so it felt pain when I booted anything Adobe. And it cried when I tried to use Entourage (which I just don’t do to any machine anymore). Well…it fit the bill for a few weeks, then the reality set in. I’m used to being very portable. It was frustrating to [...]

I love the smell of a new Mac product. There is something distinctly satisfying about opening the box of a new Macbook or any Mac accessory and smelling whatever it is they use to neatly seal them up. I think Pavlov’s dogs might relate to what I’m talking about here. But between the times when I get to open new toys, while I’m letting the credit card cool down from all that swiping, I go on the hunt for new applications that make me happy. And at those times, nothing makes me happier than free. So here is a list [...]
